Physical Therapy Q & A

What are the benefits of physical therapy?

Physical therapy can provide many benefits including increased mobility, flexibility, and motion. It has shown to be very effective in treating back pain, meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease, among other conditions. Receiving treatment by a physical therapist isn't a passive activity, and participating in your own recovery can be empowering.

What should I expect during physical therapy treatment?

Your first therapy session may include an initial evaluation of your ailment or injury to decide the best possible approach to treatment. During the treatment, Dr. Ford will instruct you on therapeutic exercises; educate you on how to manage and care for your symptoms; and provide manual therapy if necessary. Patients may be given some specific instructions to continue treatment efforts at home including ice, electrical stimulation, or traction. You'll also learn ways to speed recovery and prevent recurrence of the problem. At Serenity Chiropractic & Family Wellness Center, Dr. Ford teaches patients how to perform special “blueprint” exercises. These exercises can be carried out in the comfort of your own home and will help strengthen and correct the irregularities in your body which may be causing pain.

What type of treatment will I receive?

Dr. Ford provides treatment after the initial evaluation, along with ongoing reassessment and evaluation. It may consist of a variety of hands-on joint and soft tissue treatment techniques, exercise techniques, and pain reducing modalities. These types of treatments are designed to increase motion and strength, reduce pain, and restore function. Physical therapy helps ease the pain associated with musculoskeletal injuries, and assists in recovering from surgeries or other challenges such as improving balance or problems with walking. People recovering from non-orthopedic surgeries can also find physical therapy beneficial to regaining strength and endurance. In each case, targeted corrective exercises and stretches from Dr. Ford will help you feel great, while also helping your body achieve a natural state of balance and health.
